Open Letter Raila Odinga
Dear Raila
It is true you are an enigma in Kenyan politics. The Luo have blindly followed you . This is not a problem because politics is all about influence and numbers. The blind following and tribal loyalty you get from your tribesmen gives you the numbers you require to intimidate, cajole and threaten your real and perceived political enemies. I would be lying to you, if I do not confess that I envy you for your ability to whip up the tribal passions and loyalty of your people. The tragedy of Kenyan politics is; there are a lot of cohorts who follow their leaders for the sole purpose of personal aggrandisement. The current crop of Luo MPs is a good example of “democracy according to Raila Odinga”.I have read a lot about you since 1988 and I have never been able to discern the ideology that informs the political decisions that you make. For example; I know you conceived, planned and executed the infamous attempted coup in 1982. You left the country soon thereafter and abandoned the poor soldiers who had followed and believed in your idea of a violent take-over of an elected government. It does no matter to me what you think or thought about that government, you had no right to lead a violent mob to uproot a government which was lawfully in power. As late as March 2006 you had the temerity to ask unarmed Jua Kali artisans along Langata road to fight eviction from private land using whatever means thay had. More recently you incited a mob and laid plans to evict a public servant from office. Your recent political outbursts display a person who is desperate for political power. You also sound like an activist who is out to revenge against anybody who crossed your political path in the past.
Secondly in 1997 you contested the presidency and managed a paltry 400,000 votes mainly from the Luo. You later entered into a pact with Moi (read KANU) and earned an appointment as a Minister. You could not work with Moi and KANU since your schemes did not fit in their agenda. You disorganised the ruling party and cost them an electoral victory. In 2002 you joined political forces with politicians from other parts of Kenya and this led to a regime change. Within no time you began to challenge the regime you had helped create. You have jumped ship from any party or political grouping that did not accomodate your personal political schemes.
During and after the November 2005 referendum, you used very abusive words to describe the people and politicians from the Mt. Kenya and parts of Western Kenya who voted with the government. You called the Mt. Kenya people names, the Bungoma people; traitors and used very abusive words against Mzee Hon. Nyachae. You did not spare Hon. Musikari Kombo and Hon. Charity Ngilu from insults. More recently you called Hon. Joe Khamis garbage, the Hon. Mwai Kibaki a political prostitute and FORD- K a donkey. You rubbished an opinion poll that showed you trailing Hon. Musyoka in popularity as a beauty contest. When Cyrus Jirongo questioned your leadership credentials, you called him very choice words. Hon. Raila, you appear to be a politician who cannot accomodate the views of any person who does not agree with you. This is very dangerous for a country like ours. My biggest concern however is why you always have an insult against any leader who disagrees with you. Hon. Raila, you are older than my own father but I find it hard to listen to the insults and foul language you use in your public appearances. My unsolicited advise to you is; avoid insults and check the words you use to describe other leaders. They are leaders by their own right, have a following and they deserve respect. If you change the tenor of your speech, you could persuade a lot more people to vote for you.
I have taken time to submit this comment knowing very well that it will be edited, deleted or rubbished by the fanatics who follow you blindly. I also expect very choice words from them because they have learnt to trade insults from the master. I mean well because I appreciate the role you have played in the liberation of this country. I commend you for the years you sacrificied fighting for democracy. I am a retired Military Officer. I served in the Kenya Air Force and read a lot of records concerning the events of the infamous coup attempt. I bear no grudge against you as a person but I will never forget the pain and suffering that was visited upon us owing to your political misadventure.
Regretably,
