'It a conspiracy to destroy my life,family,career'- Ngaithe
Exclusive by Jambo Magazine, UK
Kenyan ambassador to the United States, Mr Leonard Njogu Ngaithe claimed yesterday that he is a victim of an elaborate plot out to ‘finish’ him.
“Everything has been blow out of proportion by a few malicious individuals who wants to destroy my life, my family and my career “, said Ngaithe who spoke exclusively to JAMBO! Magazine from Washington.
Ngaithe, 47, maintains that his relationship with the junior female diplomat- Miss Jane Kahuki, 41, a second secretary at Kenya’s Mission at United Nations was a private matter blown out of proportion.
‘It was a serious error of judgement which I bitterly regret, some people are taking advantage of the situation to destroy my life”
“I did not sexually assault Miss Kahuki, I have known her for over 10 years, it was consensual, that is the truth of the matter, and that what Miss Kahuki told New York police.
Ngaithe regretted that his family was deliberately being dragged into the matter.
Miss Kahuki served at the ministry of foreign affairs where they met with Ngaithe in early 1990s before she was posted to Kenya’s embassy in Cairo,Egypt. She was posted to Kenya’s mission in New York in February this year.
So how did the ambassador end up being accused of a sexual assault by a woman he had known for over a decade? I asked,
“Last Wednesday , Miss Kahuki , other guests and I went out in New York.
Miss Kahuki became intoxicated and out of responsibility, I offered to take her home”
She lives in Flushing, Queens, New York , at her home, she left me to go to the bathroom, but instead ran to her neighbours who called police.
Ngaithe’s version of events tally with a statement from New York Police Department:
“Miss Kahuki ran from Mr. Ngaithe to her neighbour's house and said he had sexually assaulted her, police said. The woman was uncooperative, police said.
During an examination in Flushing Hospital, Miss Kahuki police she would not press charges against Mr. Ngaithe. She further said the intercourse was consensual hence there was no arrest.
“The matter ended there but in a dramatic twist of events, Ngaithe’s nightmare has just began.
As the drama unfolded in New York, a senior government official who was accompanying President Kibaki to the UN visit took charge, and in unexplained circumstances, the story was leaked to the media, followed by allegations that the envoy had been recalled.
As Ngaithe gave his version of events yesterday, speculations were rife that he has been recalled home again, twice in one week.
“A group of people out there is determined to destroy me, I have not received any formal communication from Nairobi effecting my recall” said Ngaithe.
Yesterday, JAMBO! Magazine verified independently that Mr Ngaithe still in the US and was among the Kenyan delegation attending crucial World Bank meeting which opened today at WB Headquarters in Washington.
A World Bank source said, Ngaithe attended in his capacity as Kenya’s ambassador to the US.Kenyan delegation is led by Finance minister, Mr David Mwiraria and includes Central Bank Governor, Mr Mulei.
The new development contradicts an earlier government announcement issued on Saturday last week which said: 'The Government has, with immediate effect, recalled Kenya's Ambassador to Washington and a member of staff of the Kenyan mission to the UN, New York, to help in the investigations,'
JAMBO! Magazine has obtained a copy of the original unsigned government statement hurriedly faxed from New York to media houses in Nairobi on the orders of a senior civil servant.
The unsigned statement may explain why the Government spokesman, Dr Alfred Mutua, said he could not confirm the authenticity of the statement.
Investigations by JAMBO! Magazine in London revealed a catalogue of blunders and irregularities on how the government handed the scandal, which raises alarming questions:
Why would a senior government official order a recall of a high ranking diplomat when the President was within the same building?
At what stage was the President informed of the incident, and Did he order the recall? If he did, why would he do it verbally?
Sources says that that It appear that the plot to remove the envoy from Washington was a well rehearsed politically motivated plot that went terribly wrong which may explain the government’s random response and the ensuing confusion surrounding the incident.
Yesterday, it further emerged that the New York State Prosecutors had not threatened to take any legal action against Ngaithe, contrary to Kenyan government version of events.
Washington is the most prestigious diplomatic posting followed by London and New York.Ngaithe was appointed ambassador to the United States on July 15, 2004.
A 1981 graduate of the University of Nairobi, Ngaithe has served in the diplomatic service for his entire working life serving as Kenya’s ambassador to the Netherlands, with accreditation to the Czech Republic between 2000 and 2004 and as acting High Commissioner in London between 1999-2000.
HERESAY AND TRIBAL POLITICS
Elsewhere, confidential interviews with several government sources who were in London this week, revealed that some powerful individuals in the government saw Ngaithe as a threat, and a bitter row between two rival factions , each wanting their man to be in charge in Washing, has been brewing behind scenes.
“Ngaithe is tipped to be the next PS in the ministry of foreign affairs and a possible replacement for Ambassador Francis Muthaura as Head of Civil Service, not every body is sharing this view”, said a cabinet minister who sought anonymity.
Another senior government said, “Ngaithe is a raising star, and he’s definitely headed for bigger fish after his Washington posting”
“There’s a group who want their man to take over in Washington, but Ngaithe’s record of achievement speaks for it self, which make’s the ‘take over bid’ more intense” said another source.
'The battle centres on tribal lines, between the Kikuyus, the Luyhas and the Luos, The Luyhas want to install thier man in Washington,a sex scandal involving their rival was a good chance to force him out, though it now seems to back fire' added a senior diplomatic source.
At the time of going to Press, both Ngaithe and Miss Kahuki, were still in the US.
