in KOL Nyambura opines:
Wenzangu,
At one time, the key contentious issues in Kenya were about the M.O.U and the DEEP and ENORMOUS need for the M.O.U to be honored by NARC: the very same Kenyans touting oranges or bananas were involved on both sides of the fence in that drama and its lack of resolution. At the time, the PM position had become a necessity if not “political oxygen” for some! That didn’t get Kenyans very far-or did it?
Then, came the threat for the LDP/NAK split from NARC-more or less the same faces (on both sides of the fence) were involved. At one time (Xmas time), individual politicals parties were declared “illegal” unless they were part of NARC-the charade subsided. The VP was “torn” between LDP and the VP ship
Some KANU people were drafted into the CABINET to the great IRE of wananchi including yours truly
Then came BOMAS and the BOMAS draft—the draft was declared not to be “an accurate representation” of Wanjikus input. Again factions and splits emerged. The MFUNGAMANO draft surfaced-tension and discussions followed and then the wind subsided! The PM position was greatly debated at the time. The same faces and voices/individuals could be heard (loudly) on both sides of the fence.
Several Kenyans declared interest in running for the office of the president in 2007 (Hon. Kalonzo was first, HE Kibaki, Hon. Raila, etc). Surprising, these announcements have made no big ripples in the lake and have not been another source of splits. Comments about the declarations came in from just a handful of Kenyans.
LDP/NARC wrangles and apparent discontent continued
NARC tried to woo Total Man-that strategy was ILL-FATED and didn’t go well at all! I suspect they abandoned it with “great bitterness”-someone may have lost his ugali in the process.
HE Emilio finally makes the long awaited tour of the lake land-he and Hon Raila present an IMPRESSIVE picture of “brotherhood” like has never been witnessed among warriors! The picture confused some of their cronies. Some individuals from around the Mountain of Ostriches threw tantrums—HE Emilio failed to offer them a pacifier—more confusion- the show ended.
The tabling of the draft constitution became protracted and constantly Kenyans DEMANDED the tabling of the new draft constitution-there were many opinions as to why the draft was being delayed. I too have my own!
Finally the draft appears: 80% of the contents is said to be satisfactory, 20% is not! The main points of contention still are: the TOP posts! PM, deputy PM, Deputy Vice presidents-the powers of the president etc. E.g. All the mute issues about education and a variety of other matters appear to be NON-ISSUES! The campaign started as "Vote YES or NO"-now it has evolved into about Oranges and Bananas saga accompanied with Kenyan humor galore! My question is: when Kenyans vote NO, what do Kenyans want in place of what is erroneous and what people are opposed to? Can Kenyans agree on what they need and want? Within what timeframe? What changes do the people who are most vocal want-the Cabinet, politicians, clergy and regular wananchi propose? E.g. what changes would veterans like HE Hon, retired president Moi suggest as best?
Today, the call for “calling off the referendum” has been sounded! Why don’t Kenyans want to have the referendum-after all? What would make a good reason for not having a referendum? Why not have the referendum as planned and then move to FIXING the draft?
After the referendum (or not), what guarantee do we have that Kenyans are not going to find themselves at another, and another, and another fork on the road of UNSRESOLVED issues and political pendulum? At what time will these matters cease to be about “politics” narrowly defined and be more about governance and the rule of law and nation building?
Could this draft be a classic case of “reverse psychology”? “ You ask for or do the opposite of what you want and through the magic of human nature, you end up with what you really wanted”?
