`No' wave will sweep away the old guard, says Raila

Roads Minister Raila Odinga has declared that the Orange movement
will usher in youthful leadership in 2007.
Raila said politicians leading the Orange revolution in the campaign
against the proposed constitution had found a new platform to shunt
aside the old guard.
Raila was addressing hundreds of people during the official opening
of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hall at Savana Hotel in Ugunja, Siaya
District on Saturday night.
Ugenya MP Stephen Ondiek owns it.
Raila, who was accompanied by the Official Leader of the Opposition,
Mr Uhuru Kenyatta and Cabinet ministers Anyang' Nyong'o and Ochillo
Ayacko said the Orange team would make the country one of the best
democracies in the world.
He said the Orange group had brought together youthful leaders fired
by a common vision for the future of the country.
"We are going to liberate this country from dictatorial rule after
succeeding in the referendum, all through to the next General
Election," said Raila.
The Minister said it was high time young Turks took over the
country's leadership and old politicians stepped aside because they
had failed the electorate.
He was accompanied by more than 10 MPs, including Kanu Secretary-
General William Ruto, Otieno Kajwang, Sammy Weya, Nick Salat and
Jakoyo Midiwo whom he described as members of the Great Orange
Democratic Movement.
Others were Adhu Awiti, Ken Nyagudi, Oburu Odinga, Justin Muturi and
Philip Okundi.
Meanwhile, leaders in the Orange team are reportedly trying to woo
provincial administrators to campaign against the Wako draft.
Kanu's Central Province co-ordinator Geoffrey Gachagua said the
Orange team was consultating District Commissioners and District
Officers to woo them to No side.
He said his side was also reaching out to chiefs and their
assistants to win their confidence and assure them their jobs could
only be safeguarded by rejecting the Wako draft.
Gachagua said the Orange team has taken the initiative after
Internal Security minister John Michuki said he would write letters
to chiefs and their assistants.
"We are telling them not to behave like suicide bombers. You cannot
trust Michuki even if he writes a letter to you. He is in a
government that does not honour promises," said Gachagua.
He said some administrators had approached the Orange team secretly
to express their worries.
Some of the administrators, Gachagua said, were afraid of being
victimised if they did not campaign for the draft.
Gachagua said the move by Michuki to write letters was futile as the
majority of chiefs had made up their minds.
"They know that once the new constitution is adopted they will be
out of jobs in six months' time. Why should they vote themselves out
of a job?" he wondered.
He warned them not to be like the proverbial dog which dropped its
bone after seeing a reflection in the river.
Gachagua said he was using the contacts he established as a District
Officer and as an Under Secretary. He condemned the alleged misuse
of State resources.
