We need a new Bill before 2007
THE negotiations for the new constitution have the best chance of success between now and 2007.
The next elections and power arrangements that follow ought to take place under the new laws.
The Kibaki Government is in a tight corner but still in power – ODM have been given the people’s brief but out of power. Narc Government has been chastised pretty well in the just concluded referendum. And that was a warning well served.
A good number of Narc and Kanu MPs are now in ODM and appear willing to work with us. Both sides are seeking to be hired come 2007 elections. This ought to be the people’s condition.
The side that most faithfully and with fidelity to the peoples views, pushes for and wins the most inclusive constitution for the country, gets the vote come 2007 elections. As it is, the constitution will be the election theme in that year, enacted or not. Let us define that theme for the politicians.
“We gave you the new constitution” their tune should sound, in 2007; and not “We promise to give you the new constitution once elected.” For over 40 years, we have lived on countless unfulfilled political promises. It is time we started living on honored promises, and retraceable performance records.
NARC sang our song, danced our dance and even pretended to walk our walk in 2002. They promised us heaven on earth. Three years down the line, we are still roasting in hell.
ODM is now holding our brief, and seems to be very much in step with us; both in song dance and walk.
Let them honor the promise between now and 2007 and then we will give them a checked power.
“Do not raise your voice, improve your argument!”
